Just now in Diaosu we have 4 paintings by Gearaidh Mac Griogair who advocates the use of “techno” colours in his abstract paintings and graduated from DoJ in 2009.  As a previous resident of our area Gearaidh visited us and later brought in some of his artwork.

Our 3 day children’s festival was successful!  So many visitors came along to our underwater space for paper crafts and the afternoon activities.  A total of 24 children came just to our Summer Parties over the 3 days to play games, build with clay and receive a bespoke creative party bag.  Looking forward to next year!

We are almost ready for our mini summer festival for children starting tomorrow and this is our full activity schedule…

15th May 2013

This has not been updated for a little while!  We were preoccupied with our work on Project 209 which has it’s on pages on our website, continuing with projects for other organisations, developing an online shop, meeting with Shona Robison and planning out a new schedule for activity!

Next up however, we are pleased to be holding an exhibition of work by local ceramicist Rose Head.  This will be coinciding with an introduction to ceramics class held on 25th May.  There are limited spaces for this class.  For more details see http://www.diaosu.org.uk/artist-classes/rosemary-head.

28th November 2012

Wow, time has passed quickly since our last post! We have been busy mostly with our 209 Awards for All funded project, Martin Hill’s oil painting classes, providing work for Pure Media UK and working with a group from Abertay Sheltered Housing. We are very soon to start providing work experience for a 5th year pupil in secondary school and are working hard at preparing artwork which we will add to our online shop soon.

On 1st and 2nd December 2012 (this weekend!), we will be holding our Places exhibition and Open Days for those aged 16 to 25. This is provided as part of our Awards for All funded project 209 and we will have a selection of our resources available to try out. There will be a variety of artists attending who will make their own things and share knowledge. Places is an exhibition of travel photography and mixes artwork by artists and local young people using photography, photograms and representations of local landmarks on shrink plastic. If you are interested in attending our Open Days let us know by calling 07948 336234 or emailing us at enquiry@diaosu.org.uk.

Check out this photo of our new heater! We were fortunate to receive funding from the People’s Postcode Trust to buy 2 energy efficient heaters from Green Energy (Eu). People’s Postcode Trust is a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Our project received £1957.20 from the Trust for energy efficient heaters. Their website address is www.postcodetrust.org.uk and find out how to play the postcode lottery, and thus support more charities at www.postcodelottery.co.uk. We are very grateful for this funding as it allows us to purchase Redwell Heaters from Green Energy (Eu) and enable us to reduce our carbon footprint while maintaining a comfortable and warm environment for the families, young people and older people that participate in our activities.

5th September 2012

It has been almost a month since our last update! We have just finished providing a 6 week project working with clay within a residential facility in our area. This was funded by the Scottish Community Foundation and it was very much enjoyed!

We have also been getting under way with sessions for S3/S4 aged young people and working towards our Awards for All funded 209 exhibition ‘Empty Spaces’, 5th to 7th October. That will feature the work of Martin Hill and also work by local artists and young people. Some of the art displayed will relate to the Derby Street multis due to be taken down soon as we were in Butterburn court earlier this year for painting and photography after everyone had moved out. Martin will also be holding oil painting classes following the exhibition and we will post details for those soon.

7th August 2012

This Saturday we will be hosting a Craft Day where anyone can join us and work together on individual projects. If you would like to come along please feel free to email us at enquiry@diaosu.org.uk to secure a place. We will also have some pottery painting available. It will be nice to see you there!

27th July 2012

Swap Shop is almost finished! We have one day left of the exhibition and workshops week. Tomorrow we will be taking part in the Annual Fun Day based in Hilltown Park. We will be providing pottery painting activities and finger puppet making! Very excited!

We had sessions making finger puppets with families and sessions aimed at 16 to 24yr olds making plaster casts and photograms. Thank you to all that dropped in and anyone who is still keen to see the exhibition can visit us tomorrow!

Also, we have been added to The Blackford Trust’s website as they are providing us support for developing our youth programme. We are hugely grateful for this support! Our page link on their website can be found at http://www.blackfordtrust.org.uk/index_topic.php?did=215219&didpath=/215219.

15th December 2011

We have been busy since our last update with Changing Faces of Hilltown where we are working with a young person who is creating artwork with plans for an exhibition in February 2012, Diamonds in the Dark. We have also had the opportunity to submit some photos from our Bird’s Eye View exhibition for a book that will be published next year. We are pleased to be able to promote the shops and shopkeepers that will feature as part of that and they are happy to be involved.

As part of the Women’s Festival 2012, we hope to host a paper cutting demonstration by the Chinese Arts and Cultural Centre in Glasgow, Ricefield. Details will follow next year.

We are planning for a children’s craft session during January that will lead up to the Festival of Lights that Pure Media UK is organising. So far, it is planned for 28th January 2012. We are creating a light sculpture. We are making this during our sessions which are being provided for children from the local polish community.

We have set up a shop page on this website, which went online today. The items sold are made within 209 Hilltown and are being used to fund projects, currently towards the cost of a volunteer opportunity in South Africa for Carrie, with Pure Media UK (our neighbours).

There are sooo many plans for the new year (and beyond) which we are happily attempting to make a reality…

…for now, however, we wish you a happy christmas!!
